COMM11005 Introduction to New Media Studies

Course details

This course introduces students to new media as a set of technologies defined by social, historical and cultural contexts. The newness of new media transforms culture and social relations by producing new kinds of representations and modes of communication. It has the power to change the way individuals and communities relate to one another and to ensure their existence within the mediascapes of a globalizing world. The course examines new media in their contemporary sense as well as earlier forms of new media. The course will enable students to recognize the specific characteristics of new media and their effects in the cultural and social domains
