Awards and Scholarships

University scholarships and bursaries

CQU acknowledge, with gratitude, the generosity of the following donors:

Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarships -  $5000 scholarship
The Australian South Sea Islander Scholarship Award winner will receive a yearly contribution of $5000 towards their education and living expenses while studying. The scholarship is awarded to an on-campus CQU student of Australian South Sea Islander descent who is motivated to study and complete their initial undergraduate degree. Chancellor Stan Jones Scholarship - $2000
The Chancellor Stan Jones Scholarship is a university award that was established in 2004 in honour of the former Chancellor, Hon Justice Stan Jones, to provide recognition of outstanding academic achievement and to support further higher degree studies. The Scholarship will be awarded on an annual basis to the recipient of the University Medal where the recipient will be continuing on to further higher degree study. It comprises a Certificate together with a monetary payment of $2000.

Jessie Mary Vasey Memorial Bursary - War Widows' Guild Aust (Qld) - Bundaberg Sub-Branch Inc - $400
The annual bursary of $400 awarded by the Bundaberg sub-branch of the War Widow's Guild of Australia will be a once only award to a Central Queensland University nursing student enrolled at the Bundaberg campus and who will be continuing full-time study in the nursing program on CQU's Bundaberg campus. Only a student who is a descendant of a war widow or a returned serviceperson is eligible to apply. Past recipients will be excluded.

Selection will also be based on outstanding academic performance in conjunction with a 500-word supporting eligibility statement. For further details please contact the Faculty Secretary on 07 4150 7051.

Queensland Alumina Limited Scholarship - $5000
The QAL Scholar will receive $5000 per year for the duration of their program. The scholarship is awarded to a full-time first year student who proceeded from Year 12 in the previous year, whose home is in the Port Curtis region (Gladstone City, Calliope and Miriam Vale Shires), and who is studying Science, Business, Engineering or Informatics at CQU. Queensland Country Women's Association, Central Highlands Division Bursary - $500

The annual bursary of $500 will be a once only award to a first year full-time Central Queensland University student who will be continuing full-time study in a program with Central Queensland University. Students enrolled in any program offered by Central Queensland University whose permanent home address is in the Central Highlands of Central Queensland are eligible to apply for the bursary.

Selection will be based on outstanding academic performance, in conjunction with a 500 word supporting statement. For further details please contact student_finance@cqu.edu.au.


Robert James Diamond Science Trust Scholarships
Two students entering an undergraduate science program at CQU will be selected to receive a $1000 scholarship each to help with the costs of textbooks and other expenses in their first term of study at Central Queensland University.

The Dale Pengelly Scholarship

The Dale Pengelly scholar will receive $1500.00 for the duration of their enrolment within the first year of the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree program. The scholarship will be available only for the minimal time required to complete this program - ie. 3 years. The scholarship will be awarded according to the following conditions:

*The recipient must have successfully auditioned and been accepted into the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree program at CQU Rockhampton campus

*The recipient must be a full-time first year student who completed Year 12 in the year immediately prior to commencing the Bachelor of Performing Arts program and whose permanent home address whilst completing Year 12 was located in the City of Gladstone

*The recipient will also be decided on the basis of an additional 1000 words (maximum) statement written by the applicant demonstrating how they might benefit from being awarded this scholarship.

All applications will be considered and assessed by a panel. In consultation with Mr Pengelly, the University may decide NOT to recommend a scholarship recipient in any given year.

Co-operative Engineering Scholarships

$1000 - A total of twelve (12) scholarships will be awarded annually to students who enrol in the Bachelor of Engineering Co-operative/Diploma of Professional Practice (Engineering) program and who are currently completing Year 12.

Two scholarships will be available for students selected each year from grade 12 students in high schools in each of the Rockhampton, Mackay, Gladstone and Bundaberg districts (ie within a 100km radius of each centre). A further two will be available for students from South East Queensland schools. The remaining two scholarships will be available for students from other Central Queensland schools more than 100km from the four cities mentioned.

Faculty of Business and Informatics Undergraduate and Postgraduate Scholarships 2007

The Central Queensland University Faculty of Business and Informatics is proud to offer scholarships for new and continuing students studying undergraduate programs and postgraduate programs in 2007.

The scholarships are part of an initiative, encouraging students to undertake study in Business and Information Technology related fields. Each scholarship is intended to provide financial assistance so that students can focus more effectively on their degree program. Scholarship values range from $2000 to 33 % reduction of course fees.

Capricornia College awards
Capricornia College Academic Award - $500, letter of award and name recorded on Honours Board
The award is offered annually to a current Member of College who was resident in the College for at least the previous two terms and achieved the highest grade point average during this time (whilst studying the equivalent of the full time load).

Capricornia College Scholarships - 50% reduction in residential fees
Awarded to a Member of Capricornia College who is a resident for the entire academic year and achieves a high level of balance and attainment in the following three areas:- (1) academic achievement (ie. overall academic achievement and/or personal level improvement); (2) leadership (ie. demonstration of initiative, motivation and encouragement in clubs, groups and/or associations within the College); (3) participation (ie. involvement with College activities, functions and projects).

Capricornia College/Faculty Award - $350
An award from each faculty under the terms that the student is a Member of Capricornia College for the entire academic year and has achieved the highest GPA of Credit or better while undertaking the equivalent of a full-time study load during Winter Term of the previous year, and Autumn Term of the current year.

Commonwealth Learning Scholarships (CLS)
The CLS program aims to assist students fom low income backgrounds, rural and regional area and Indigenous students with the costs of higher education.

Scholarships will be paid for up to four years. Both commencing and continuing students can apply for the two categories of scholarships within the program.

* Commonwealth Education Costs Scholarships (CECS) to assist with general education costs - $2000 per year (plus CPI adjustment).
* Commonwealth Accommodation Scholarships (CAS) to assist with accommodation expenses for those from a rural or regional area who must move in order to attend university as an internal student - $4000 per year (plus CPI adjustment).
These scholarships are tax exempt.

Other equity grants

Equity Merit Scholarships

Equity Merit Scholarships (EMS) are available in 2007 to help continuing students in financial hardship. These scholarships will be administered along the lines of the Commonwealth Learning Scholarships (CLS). Applicants must meet the low socio-economic status criterion.

One-off Grants

One-off equity grants to assist with education expenses are also available to students experiencing financial hardship.

Equity Computer Awards

A DELL computer is awarded to students who live in remote and isolated areas and study in the flex mode. Students need to demonstrate low personal income to qualify to be awarded a computer for the duration of their study program.

Equity Compulsory Placement Initiative

Students who need to undertake compulsory work placements for longer than two weeks, can apply for financial assistance to meet some of the associated costs of the unpaid professional placement. To qualify applicants must meet the low socio-economic status.

Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music scholarships and bursaries

Jennifer and Adrian Gibson Prize - $200
Awarded to the student who is considered to have the most promising voice for music theatre (Bachelor of Music Theatre).

North Jacklin Nissan Prize - $100 and certificate
Awarded to the best student of jazz at the Conservatorium (Bachelor of Jazz Studies).

Rotary Club of Mackay Prize - $150
Awarded to the best first year student (in any program) at the Conservatorium.

School of Performing Arts Staff Prize - $300 and certificate
Awarded to the School of Performing Arts' graduating student, completing in minimum time, achieving the highest GPA with a minimum of Credit, in one of the following undergraduate programs:

* CU93 Bachelor of Jazz Studies
* CQ79 Bachelor of Music Theatre
* CU01 Bachelor of Music
* CU29 Bachelor of Performing Arts.

Ted Malone Prize - $150
Awarded to the student who has made the most outstanding progress (Bachelor of Music Theatre and Bachelor of Jazz Studies).

Annual Prize in Composition - awarded on the basis of results and overall achievement in the area of composition.

Annual Prize in Guitar/Bass - awarded on the basis of results and overall achievement in the area of guitar/bass.

Annual Prize in Academic Studies - awarded on the basis of results and overall achievement in the academic studies.

Annual Prize in Theatre Studies - awarded on the basis of results and overall achievement in the area of theatre studies.

Annual Prize in Voice - awarded on the basis of results and overall achievement in the area of voice.

Annual Prize in Wind/Brass/Percussion - awarded on the basis of results and overall achievement in the area of wind/brass/percussion.

Annual Prize for Potential - awarded to a Conservatorium student who demonstrates the most potential as a practising artist.

Annual Prize for Ensemble Performance - awarded to the ensemble demonstrating an active schedule and the most consistent quality of performance.

Student of the Year - deemed by staff to be the most consistently high achiever in all areas of study and demonstrating a high commitment to the Conservatorium's cultural profile.

Undergraduate awards and prizes
Andrew Cataldo Memorial - $100
Awarded to the student enrolled in program CA87, CA88 or CF47 achieving the highest Weighted GPA (minimum of 5) over the 48 credit units comprising Year 2 of the electrical plan.


Anglicare Central Queensland Award - $500
Awarded to the graduating Bachelor of Social Work student (including Honours students) achieving the highest weighted GPA of Credit or better over the four years of the degree program at the first attempt.

Anne Murray and Co Solicitors Prize and memento - $200 and memento
Awarded to the undergraduate Faculty of Business and Informatics student enrolled at Emerald Campus who, at the first attempt, achieves the highest passing result in the course LAWS11030 Introductory and Contract Law.

Applied Physics Excellence Award - $200 and certificate
Awarded to the eligible student graduating from the Bachelor of Applied Physics or dual degrees achieving the highest Weighted GPA (minimum of 5) in core physics courses in Levels one, two and three, plus four Level 3 physics electives.

ASI Undergraduate Steel Design Award - $200 and certificate
Awarded to the student obtaining the highest result (minimum of credit) at the first attempt, for a steel design project as a part of: ENEC12004 Theory and Practice of Structural Design.


Australian Computer Society, Queensland Branch, Informatics Undergraduate Prize - $250, and one year's membership of the Society, Prize Certificate and winner will be nominated for the ACS's ICT Graduate of the Year Award
To be awarded to the Queensland student completing an ACS accredited degree, with the highest GPA for their program.


Australian Human Resources Institute Award for Excellence (Criteria 1) - one year membership of the Australian Human Resources Institute to the value of $330 and a certificate of award
Awarded to the undergraduate Faculty of Business and Informatics student who, at the first attempt and in the same year, achieves the highest overall passing result in the courses:

* HRMT19021 Australian Industrial Relations
* HRMT19012 Performance Management
* HRMT19014 Human Resources Planning, Recruitment and Selection.

Australian Human Resources Institute Award for Excellence (Criteria 2) - one year membership of the Australian Human Resources Institute to the value of $330 and a certificate of award
Awarded to the graduand achieving the highest weighted GPA in the Human Resources Management plan of the Bachelor of Business program.

Australian Institute of Building Surveyors Prize (Criteria 1) - Cash component $300 - Total prize to the value of $700 to include commemorative plaque, certificate, book and student membership of the Institute
Awarded to the graduating Bachelor of Building Surveying (CA33) student with the highest GPA at the first attempt of courses.

Australian Institute of Building Surveyors Prize (Criteria 2) - Cash component $200 - Prize to the value of $600 including commemorative plaque, book and student membership of the Institute
Awarded to the graduating Associate Degree of Building Surveying (CA34) student with the highest GPA at the first attempt of courses.


Australian Institue of Management Prize - Queensland Division, Gladstone Branch - eStudent Membership and selection of management books valued at $100

Australian Institute of Management Student Medal - AIM Student Medal and book prize valued at $150
Awarded to the graduand achieving the highest weighted GPA in the final year in the Bachelor of Business. The final year of the program must be studied in full-time mode.

Australian Institute of Physics Prize, Queensland Branch - $100 book prize
Awarded to the Bachelor of Applied Physics student who has achieved the highest GPA in Year 1 of the program, at first attempt, and has continued studies with applied physics as a major component.

Australian Literacy Educators Association Prize, Central Queensland Council - $75 book voucher or books and one year's subscription to the ALEA
Awarded to the Rockhampton campus student obtaining the highest combined result in:

* EDCU13016 Literacy in the Classroom and
* EDCU14019 English Curriculum and Pedagogy
* EDED11406 Teaching Reading.

Australian Society for Parasitology Undergraduate Prize - $400
Prize under review.

Berserker Clinical Psychology Practice Prize - $500
Awarded to the student obtaining the highest passing result in PSYC14025 Professional Practice of Psychology, provided that the student has performed as least to Distinction level.

Biological and Environmental Sciences Staff Prize - book prize
Awarded to the full-time first year Bachelor of Science (Aquatic Resource Management plan) student with the highest weighted GPA of Credit or better in the Level 1 core courses of the program at the first attempt.


BMA Gregory Crinum Mine - Principles of Economics Award - $150
Awarded to the undergraduate Faculty of Business and Informatics student enrolled at Emerald campus, who at the first attempt, achieves the highest passing result in ECON11026 Principles of Economics.

Bob Beevers Memorial Prize - $200
Awarded to the graduating Graduate Diploma of Learning and Teaching student, completing in minimum time, who achieves the highest GPA plus shows creativity and innovation in their use of the on-line learning system.


Bobbi and Paul Cruice Prize - $200 and certificate
To be awarded to the student who has consistently shown a high degree of commitment and effort and has developed and demonstrated an outstanding creative ability in one or more of the technical areas in the art of drama and/or theatre. The prize is to be awarded to the student for the potential demonstrated for future growth and development. The student should have a GPA of 5.00 or above and should be graduating from the Bachelor of Performing Arts with a Drama/Theatre major.

Brown & Bird Prize - $300 book prize
Awarded to the undergraduate Faculty of Business and Informatics student enrolled at Mackay campus who, at first attempt and in the same year, achieves the highest overall passing result in:

* ACCT11059 Using Accounting for Decision Making; and
* LAWS11030 Introductory and Contract Law.

Bruce Hiskens Memorial Award - $250
Awarded to the graduating student who has the highest achievement in co-operative Engineering work placement performance in Gladstone, based on assessment of work placement reports and "Employer's Evaluation of Co-op Student" reports on final work placement.

Bundaberg Campus Trophy (Nursing) - Perpetual Trophy to be held in School - Certificate

Awarded to the graduating Bachelor of Nursing student achieving the highest weighted GPA of Credit or better over the three years of program at the first attempt (each campus will have a trophy).


Bundaberg Distilling Company Environmental Science Award - Book vouchers to the value of $500
Awarded to the CQU Bundaberg student studying on campus who achieves the highest percentage on first attempt in ENVR11011 Environmental Science A. The student must be 18 years old upon acceptance of the award. If more than one student achieves the same percentage then the prize will be split.

Bundaberg Distilling Company Science Award - Book vouchers to the value of $500
Awarded to the CQU Bundaberg student studying on campus who achieves the highest percentage on first attempt in CHEM11007 Introductory Concepts of Chemical Sciences. The student must be 18 years old upon acceptance of the award. If more than one student achieves the same percentage then the prize will be split.

Bundaberg Newspaper Company Award for Journalism - $250 and certificate
Awarded annually to the enrolled CQU Bundaberg student who at first attempt achieves the highest passing grade of credit or above in JOUR11005 Introduction to Journalism.

Bundaberg Newspaper Company CQU Bundaberg Student of the Year Award - $750 and certificate
Awarded annually, through promotion by the Bundaberg Newspaper Company to the CQU Bundaberg graduating student with a minimum GPA 5.0 who has also through their involvement and participation made an outstanding contribution to the community of Bundaberg and surrounding districts.

Bundaberg Port Authority Award - $250 and perpetual trophy
Awarded to the Bachelor of Information Technology student enrolled on campus at Bundaberg who obtains the highest grade point average, with a minimum GPA of 5, for completion of all first level core courses in the minimum time.


Bundaberg Region Tourism Award - Take time to Discover holiday valued at $220 and certificate
Awarded annually to the full-time Bachelor of Business student enrolled at CQU Bundaberg, who at first attempt achieves the highest grade in MRKT11029 Marketing.

Bundaberg U3A Learning Management Prize - $500 and certificate
Awarded to the full-time Bachelor of Learning Management student enrolled at Bundaberg Campus who, at first attempt and in the same year, achieves the highest combined weighted GPA in the core introductory courses:

Awarded to the student from the Bachelor of Science (Chemical Sciences plan) who obtained the highest weighted GPA of Distinction or better in CHEM13032 Chemistry Project.

CPA Australia, Queensland Prize (Criteria 3) - $500, certificate and two years' membership of CPA Australia

Awarded to the graduand achieving the highest weighted GPA in the Bachelor of Accounting Program who is academically eligible for admission to CPA Australia as an Associate Member.

CPA Australia, Rockhampton Branch - John Carkeek Memorial - $200
Awarded to the undergraduate Faculty of Business and Informatics student in the Bachelor of Accounting program at Rockhampton Campus (internal mode) achieving the highest overall passing result, at the first attempt and in the same year for courses:

* ACCT11057 Principles of Accounting, and
* ACCT11059 Using Accounting for Decision Making.

CPA Australia Hong Kong China Division Excellence Award - HK$1000

Awarded to the graduand who has completed their studies via the Hong Kong College of Technology and who has achieved the highest weighted grade point average in the Bachelor of Accounting program.

CQU Bundaberg Graduation Medal
Awarded to a CQU Bundaberg student who not only has an outstanding academic record in an undergraduate program, but also made a significant contribution to the University community.

CQU Mackay Graduation Medal
Awarded to a CQU Mackay student who not only has an outstanding academic record in an undergraduate program, but also made a significant contribution to the University community.

David Falknau Memorial Prize - $100
Awarded to the second year Bachelor of Learning Management Mackay student who demonstrates technological competence and innovation in first and second year BLM courses.


David McPherson Memorial - $100
Awarded to the student enrolle din program CA87, CA88 or CF47 achieving the highest Weighted GPA (minimum of 5) over 24 credit units (excluding the components of the Diploma of Professional Practice) comprising Year 3 (Term 2) of the electrical plan.


DGZ Chartered Accountants Prize - $150 and certificate
Awarded to the undergraduate Faculty of Business and Informatics student (Bundaberg Campus) who, at first attempt and in the same year, achieves the highest overall passing result in the courses:

* ACCT11059 Using Accounting for Decision Making and
* LAWS11030 Introductory and Contract Law.

Dr Michael Coates Undergraduate Prize - $200
Awarded to the student who achieves the highest result of credit or better in ZOOL19002 Chordate Zoology at the first attempt. Should it not be possible to separate two or more students it will be awarded to the student with the highest raw score.

Dr Ray Wilson Prize - $200
Awarded to the graduating Bachelor of Arts student with the highest weighted GPA of credit or better for the program. The student must have completed two of the following plans: Literary Studies Plan, Literary and Cultural Studies Plan or Text and Cultural Studies Plan.

Dr Val Vallis Prize - $200
Awarded to the Bachelor of Arts student with a postcode of 4680 recorded against their home address in the student records system. The recipient must have achieved the highest weighted GPA of Credit or better in four (4) or more courses at the first attempt.

Ecoscope Environmental Award - $200
Awarded to the student who obtained the highest passing result of Credit or better in EVST13014 Aquatic Systems at the first attempt.

Emerald Office National Marketing Award - $300 gift voucher
Awarded to the undergraduate Faculty of Business and Informatics student enrolled at Emerald campus who, at first attempt achieves the highest passing result in the course MRKT11029 Marketing.

Emerald Shire Council Prize - $275
Awarded to the Emerald campus student achieving the highest GPA in the four (4) Key Learning Areas (KLA's) in the 1st year of Bachelor of Learning Management accelerated program.

Engineers, Australia - Queensland Division Electrical Branch Medal - medal and certificate

The Dale Pengelly Medal

Awarded to the graduating student from the Bachelor of Performing Arts who successfully completes the degree with the highest Grade Point Average equivalent to the grade of Distinction (6.0) or higher. The recipient must have completed as a minimum, a major in one of the performing arts areas available within the degree program (drama, dance or music) and a minor in each of the remaining two performing arts areas available within the degree program.  The recipient should also have demonstrated significant contribution to the University community and the wider regional community through performance work undertaken whilst completing the requirements of the Bachelor of Performing Arts degree program.

Awarded to the midwifery graduand who has demonstrated excellence in both clinical practice and academic achievement and who has completed the award in the minimum time.

Australian Computer Society, Queensland Branch, Informatics Postgraduate Prize - $250, and one year's membership of the Society, Prize Certificate and winner will be nominated for the ACS's ICT Graduate of the Year Award

Awarded to the graduating student obtaining the highest GPA (exceeding 5.0) over the full program in the Graduate Diploma of Maintenance Management (CQ66).

Bundaberg Brewed Drinks Local Research Award - $1000 and certificate
Awarded annually to the full-time Honours student or full-time Master of Learning Management student enrolled at Central Queensland University Bundaberg or a similarly enrolled Central Queensland University student residing in the Bundaberg Region whose proposed research topic has the potential to benefit the Bundaberg region. Projects that have an emphasis on improving community sustainability would be at an advantage.

Bundaberg City Council Award for Excellence in Research - $500
Awarded as a public acknowledgement of high achievement in research by a staff member or postgraduate student at CQU Bundaberg for research that has been accepted by their peers, nationally or internationally.

CPA Australia Hong Kong China Division Excellence Award - HK$1000

Awarded to the graduand who has completed their studies via the Hong Kong College of Technology and who has achieved the highest weighted grade point average in the Master of Accounting program.
