Course details
This course builds upon the experiences of students who are studying Japanese and have spent time in Japan. These experiences will be utilised in order for students to critically reflect on their images of Japanese society. Popular images portrayed through various media are often of a monolithic, homogeneous society that is "uniquely unique". These portrayals sometimes confuse those who have experienced a different Japan. The course endeavours to dispel the notions of homogeneity and uniformity by concentrating on differences in Japanese society and critical analysis of 'nihonjimron' theories.
