This program is designed to:

• Develop an understanding of the multiple meanings of sustainability, and the concepts and theories employed in evaluating sustainable options.
• Develop an appreciation and recognition of the diversity of models and options, relating to sustainable development.
• Train students to think systemically and holistically about natural resource management and social and economic development.
• Cater for students from a variety of backgrounds, both educational and professional, and with a wide range of interests.

To satisfy the requirements of this award, students must complete four courses or 32 units of credit as outlined below. Students must undertake two core courses -  'Theories and Concepts of Sustainable Development' and  'Thinking Systemically and Sustainably'. Two courses are also to be taken from either of the streams (a choice, that is, of two courses from a selection of 8). To provide a foundational basis, the two core courses must be taken before, or concurrently with, others. There is no residential school for any course.

Students are required to complete:

• 2 compulsory core courses
• 2 electives from either of the streams below
