COMM11005 Introduction to Communication and Culture

Course description

This course explores the way in which communication and cultural practices work together in making meaning. It introduces ideas and concepts that show how communication acts ranging from an everyday conversation to a computer game are put together and interpreted. It shows how our attitudes and behaviours are shaped by communication as well as how cultural values, in turn, influence communication. The insights, concepts and terms learned in this course can be applied in many other courses in communication, journalism, multimedia, film and cultural studies and related fields such as business, education and psychology. NOTE: Although it is not a formal prerequisite, it is recommended that Bachelor of Communication students complete Cultural Industries before enrolling in this course.
