This course is based on discovering how identity has been visually represented. It allows students to explore their own sense of identity through their picture making. Making pictures is informed by a knowledge of how others have made pictures. In turn, appraising pictures is informed by an understanding of visual media which is gained through hands-on activities. Personal identity is explored through such issues as gender, race, religious belief, nationality, family life, and age. The course seeks to site student's understanding of themselves in historical and cross cultural terms. The media students will use to make their own pictures include painting and drawing. In studying the pictures of others, students will study a diverse range of media which includes painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, video, newspapers and magazines.
