At an introductory level, this course is concerned with the complex of activities which jointly comprises the tourist industry, viewed by many as the major focus of economic growth in contemporary societies. While this view is analysed, the course also gives preliminary consideration to the longer term consequences of tourism development, and the environmental, social and economic impacts of such development. The economics of the industry, the development and promotion of attractions, and issues confronting the industry in the future are examined with reference to the Australian tourist industry. It is intended that these major themes will be developed in depth in subsequent courses of study.
