This course includes two major components that are inter-related/inter-dependent. The focus of the course is on describing disease patterns in Australia, however international resources are incorporated. The course examines setting priorities in health, allocating resources based on health needs of target populations and evaluating the impact on services. As a course of study, health statistics and epidemiology, the concepts and methodologies, play a major role in disease surveillance and prevention. The critical function of epidemiology will be reviewed including areas of anticipated needs, identified risk conditions, definition of priorities and the use of available resources for planning and administering health care services.
