This course introduces students to the study of fiction, film and other media by examining the practices associated with reading particular genres such as romance, fantasy and crime. Each genre comes with its own special effects, and at the same time, draws on the generic effects of its medium. Students will explore the importance of popular genres to the understanding of contemporary life, its meanings, values and modes of behaviour. This exploration also functions as a prelude to more advanced studies in literary and cultural studies.
