This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of stress and strain as experienced in many engineering structures as well as the basic components used in mechanical and civil engineering systems. On satisfactory completion of this course, students will be able to: understand the mechanics of deformation of engineering components, the concepts of stress and strain; be able to mathematically model elastically deformed machine components; apply sound design principles to the sizing and shape of machine components; understand the mechanics of machinery; apply modelling techniques to a wide range of components. Content includes: equations of motion; static equilibrium; loads and reactions; free body diagrams; two force members; and three force members.
