ENEC12004 Theory & Practice of Structural Design

This course examines the capacity design principle and differentiates this approach from other limit state approaches, relates the importance of BMD, SFD and AFD to structural design, identifies the various modes of failure of structural components made from concrete, steel and timber under compression, tension, bending moment and shear. The course aims to translate the student's knowledge of civil engineering materials and mechanics into the principles of structural design. Students examine the principle of beam design in general terms and apply it to reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel and timber designs. Similarities and differences in design for the various materials will be covered. Also, the principle of column design will be applied to reinforced concrete, prestressed concrete, steel and timber designs.
