This course builds upon the experience of students who are studying Japanese and have had experience in living in Japan. These experiences will be utilised in order for students to critically reflect on their images of Japanese society. Popular images portrayed through various media are too often of a monolithic homogeneous society that is uniquely unique'. These portrayals sometimes confuse those who have experienced a different Japan. The course also endeavours to dispel the notions of homogeneity and uniformity by concentrating on difference in Japanese society and critical analysis of nihonjimron theories. The course is conducted through Japanese immersion.
