Offered Autumn term every odd year.
This course will examine current methods of discovering new compounds with significant bioactivity, including natural product extraction and combinatorial chemistry in combination with high throughput screening, molecular modelling. Identification methods, including nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Synthetic methods: protecting groups, oxidation and reduction, carbon-carbon bond formation, and an introduction to retrosynthesis. Distance education students will be required to attend a residential school for this course.
