Program Overview

This course is offered to students wishing to pursue a career in teaching and/or education research. A candidate for this degree shall enrol initially in one of the Bachelor of Education programs and may, subject to satisfactory performance, be permitted to enrol for the degree on Bachelor of Education (Honours) upon application to the Dean, Faculty of Education & Creative Arts.

The aim of the Honours Year is to provide high achieving students from the first three years of a Bachelor of Education course (or its equivalent) the opportunity to pursue an area of knowledge through more focused study and research. The Bachelor of Education (Honours) provides a means for students to progress directly to higher degree research at masters or doctoral level.

The course is equivalent to a fourth year of study and as such provides the basis for application for teacher registration.

Prospective students who have completed at least an initial three year education award at another recognised university and who are eligible to apply for teacher registration, also may apply for entry to the Bachelor of Education (Hons). In exceptional circumstances students with outstanding results in non-education university degrees may be considered for entry into this course for the specific purposes of research training.

Entry

Graduates are required to:

  1. achieve a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 6.0 in Years 1, 2 and 3 of the Bachelor of Education or Bachelor of Teaching courses (or equivalent). (Grades of high distinction, distinction, credit and pass are allocated a grade of 7, 6, 5, 4 respectively). Admission is subject to quotas and will depend on the availability of Faculty resources and staff to supervise students in their area of interest.
Students who enrol in the program will be assigned to a supervisor who will, with the student, plan a program based on the particular study interests of the student. In some instances, a student may also be assigned to a co-supervisor where the area of research includes more than one area of study. Students admitted to the program will be required to complete the requirements of the program in one year of full-time study or two years part-time study. Off-campus study in this course is subject to Faculty resources and the Dean’s approval.
  2. A student who holds the degree of Bachelor of Education from another recognised university, or has qualifications deemed to be equivalent, and has an equivalent GPA of 5.0, is eligible to apply for entrance to the degree of Bachelor of Education (Hons). Such a candidate shall undertake such courses and other work as the Dean shall determine.
