This program is part research and part practical, in keeping with the mission of CQCM to train informed performing musicians. It is designed to continue the student's practical performance focus and at the same time extend their academic research capabilities. The continued development of relevant performance skills, both solo and in ensemble, will be achieved by tuition on the principal instrument and a commitment to regular performances, both in workshops and in professional settings.
Research will usually take the form of a musicological study with a focus on rigorous analysis and, where possible, the value of the study applied to performance, either directly or indirectly.
Most students must complete a series of core courses plus electives in the prescribed sequence.
MUSC20202 - MUSC20205 Plan Study (24 uc) 31562 - MUSC20208 Special Research Topic/Dissertation (18 uc) plus one elective (6 uc)
Elective courses may be selected from current courses available at the CQCM, after consultation with the program advisor. Undergraduate electives may not be taken at an elementary level. Advanced electives are subject to presentation of additional assessment material, including papers, performances, and/or contact hours.
