VART13008 Visual Arts, Media & Identity
This course is based on discovering how identity
has been visually represented. It allows students to explore their
own sense of identity through their picture making. Making pictures
is informed by a knowledge of how others have made pictures. In
turn, appraising pictures is informed by an understanding of visual media
which is gained through hands-on activities. Personal identity is
explored through such issues as gender, race, religious belief,
nationality, family life, and age. The course seeks to site student's understanding
of themselves in historical and cross cultural terms. The media
students will use to make their own pictures include painting and
drawing. In studying the pictures of others, students will study
a diverse range of media which includes painting, drawing, sculpture,
photography, video, newspapers and magazines.
