BMED19002 Biomedical Instrumentation
Topics studied in this course include: fundamental
principles of analytical science, error analysis,
elemental analysis, applications of spectrophotometry,
modern high pressure liquid chromatography and gas
chromatography, electrophoresis, introductory mass
spectrometry, analysis of trace metals by atomic
absorption and ICP spectrometry, operation of
automated analytical equipment, applications of flow
injection analysis, operation of ion-selective electrodes
and gas-sensing electrode devices, ELISA assays, the
use of radioisotopes in biomedical science, safe use
and disposal of radioisotopes, use of radiation
counters, examples of the use of radioisotopes in
diagnosis and treatment of disease,
radioimmunoassay, radioligand binding assays,
autoradiography, electron microscopy, magnetic
resonance, ultrasound and x-ray imaging techniques,
pathology laboratory instrumentation. Distance
education students will be required to attend a
residential school for this course.
