TOUR20007  Tourism Studies in Asia & the Pacific
Rim
Tourism is a rapidly growing phenomenon within
the Asia/Pacific area. It is also considered as a primary means
to contribute to development and/or economic growth. While
tourism offers a widening range of opportunities, tourism growth
is not without its consequences and socio-cultural objections and limitations
within host communities and nations. This course examines the historical
experiences of Asian and Pacific Rim countries and the impact these experiences
have on both host communities and nations' attitudes to
tourism and tourism policy development. The course also examines
the socio-cultural, economic and environmental impacts of past, current
and future tourism practices and the various tourism policies and
strategies of two selected countries. The implications of these
impacts, policies and strategies for the business of tourism are
also explored.
