This course will cover the essential knowledge required to implement a successful rehabilitation program, with a particular emphasis on landform, design, erosion control, decontamination of industrial land, and the identification, propagation and use of native species. This course will also enable students to understand the physical and chemical characteristics of soils, their classification, and methods of undertaking soil substrate surveys. The course will also enable students to identify important native and exotic plant species, understand the structure and function of vegetation communities, factors limiting plant growth and the response of different plant species to stress and to learn about their involvement in land stabilisation and rehabilitation. The course will also provide an appreciation of the principles involved in design and analysis of trials related to practical techniques involved in revegetation, and requirements for evaluation of consultancies in, and implementation of, rehabilitation programs.
