Masters Degree by Research

Duration: 2 years full-time, 4 years part-time.
Mode and Location: Internal - R (and according to availability of resources), External.

The Masters Degree by Research is a program of supervised research and study leading to the submission of a thesis which makes a contribution to knowledge. The program is governed by the Rules for Masters Degrees by Research which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis. Consultation with the Associate Dean (Research) of the appropriate faculty will assist applicants to determine eligibility for admission, to identify the proposed areas of research and to ascertain the availability of suitable supervisors.

Entry Requirements

Completion of:

  • Honours degree in a relevant discipline;
  • Pass degree and a graduate diploma at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline;
  • Pass degree at a high level of academic performance in a relevant discipline, plus one year's relevant work experience;
  • Four-year undergraduate degree at a high level of academic performance, and;
  • Qualifications deemed by the selection panel to be equivalent to any of the above.

Applicants who do not satisfy any of the above criteria may be required to undertake a Masters qualifying/enabling program, normally of one year's (full-time) duration, as specified in the University's resolution on Masters qualifying programs.

Program Structure

To complete the program, a candidate will normally study for an expected period of 2 years (full-time) or 4 years (part-time). New candidates may enrol at any time of year and continuing candidates must re-enrol at the beginning of each academic year. The courses in which Masters students enrol are ungraded. Candidates who may be required to complete prescribed courses will be enrolled in a separate program (CP20).
