CULT12006 Indigenous Issues & the
Media
Not offered in 2001
In this course you will be introduced to the various issues
facing journalists when reporting on indigenous matters and the
issues facing indigenous people who are the focus of media attention.
The aim of the course is for students to critically examine and analyse
journalistic practices in relation to the representation of indigenous
people. Students will develop knowledge and practical skills in
representing indigenous issues and people in ways that suit indigenous people,
but enable journalism to fulfil its function. Students will apply
this information to various situations in the field and discover
the issues connected to the practice of journalism and representation
of indigenous people. Students will also consider the medias
role in producing and reinforcing stereotypes about indigenous Australians.
There will be some examination of alternative methods established
by indigenous groups who are seeking input into indigenous representations in
the media.
