CHEM12019 Metals in ChemistryNot offered in 2001 This course extends understanding of theoretical and applied metal and metal ion chemistry. Fundamentals of wave mechanics and the nature of atomic orbitals; relationship of orbitals and stereochemistry according to the valence-bond theory and the molecular orbital theory for simple molecules and coordination compounds; crystal field and ligand field theories, magnetic and spectral properties. Applications in bioinorganic chemistry (nature and medicine), industry and analytical chemistry. Industrial inorganic chemistry; important inorganic chemicals; health and safety in the chemical workplace.Distance education students will be required to attend a residential school for this course.
