CHEM12019 Metals in Chemistry
Not offered in 2001
This course extends understanding of theoretical and applied
metal and metal ion chemistry. Fundamentals of wave mechanics and
the nature of atomic orbitals; relationship of orbitals and stereochemistry
according to the valence-bond theory and the molecular orbital theory
for simple molecules and coordination compounds; crystal field and
ligand field theories, magnetic and spectral properties. Applications
in bioinorganic chemistry (nature and medicine), industry and analytical
chemistry. Industrial inorganic chemistry; important inorganic
chemicals; health and safety in the chemical workplace.Distance
education students will be required to attend a residential school for
this course.
