The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a program of supervised research and study leading to the submission of a thesis which makes a significant original contribution to knowledge.

The program is governed by the Rules for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy which provide details regarding all aspects of admission, progression, submission and examination of the thesis. Consultation with the Associate Dean (Research) in the appropriate faculty will assist applicants to determine eligibility for admission, to identify the proposed areas of research and to ascertain the availability of suitable supervisors.

Entry

  • Master's degree by research or with a significant research component;
  • Bachelor degree in an appropriate discipline with 1 or 2A honours;
  • Completion of at least one year's full time (or equivalent) Masters candidature of a standard which justifies transfer to the PhD;
  • Qualifications deemed to be equivalent to any of the above.

Program Structure

To complete the program, a candidate will normally study for an expected period of 3 years (full-time) or 5 years (part-time). New candidates may enrol at any time of year and continuing candidates must re-enrol at the beginning of each academic year. The courses in which PhD candidates enrol are ungraded.

The course codes are allocated according to the faculty and discipline in which the candidate is undertaking their research. The course codes will also identify if the candidate is full-time (code ending in digit ’0') or part-time (code ending in digit ’1') and if the candidate is enrolled for only part of a year (code ending in digits ’2' or'3').

Candidates who may be required to complete prescribed courses should enrol in a separate program (CP20) by completing an additional enrolment form stating the courses to be undertaken.
