Entry Requirements

 

To be eligible for entry into the GDLT all applicants must have completed a 3 year non-education Bachelor degree or equivalent from a university or college.  Applicants with degrees completed overseas must provide evidence to support that their qualifications are equivalent to an Australian 3 year Bachelor degree.  Applicants who cannot demonstrate they have completed a Bachelor degree will be refused entry to the program.

 

The GPA within the Bachelor degree must be at least 4.0.

 

Please note: Applicants with undergraduate degrees that were obtained ten or more years ago will need to supply certified evidence of current relevant professional work experience in the area of their speciality eg. letters from employers.  This experience must link to their previous undergraduate study.

 

Applicants must demonstrate the capacity to undertake the degree by meeting the following entry criteria for the teaching focus in which they wish to specialise: 

 

Primary Focus  (Years 1 - 7)

A 3 year non-education undergraduate degree or equivalent from a university or college relevant to the primary Key Learning Areas (KLAs). Applicants must indicate how their prior study applies to a range of KLAs. Applicants must have at least 8 courses of discipline studies relevant to at least 2 of the Key Learning Areas of:

• English
• Mathematics
• Science (including Biology, Chemistry, Physics)
• The Arts
• Technology
• Languages
• SOSE (including Geography and History)
• Health and Physical Education

The final intake for the Primary focus of this program will be Term 1 2014.

Secondary Focus  (Years 8 - 12)
A 3 year non-education undergraduate degree or equivalent from a university or college that demonstrates sufficient knowledge development in two teaching areas. A teaching area consists of 6 or more courses (subjects) studied within the applicants undergraduate degree.

The final intake for the Secondary focus of this program will be Term 1 2015.

This program can only be studied within Australia.

Written Statement  
All applicants must provide a written statement with their application which includes the following:

 

  • State their chosen teaching focus: Primary (Years 1 - 7) or Secondary (Years 8 - 12) and state why they have chosen this teaching focus.
  • State reasons for choosing teaching as a career as well as listing any previous teaching experience or lead learning in the workplace.
  • If choosing a Primary focus, indicate how their undergraduate study applies to the 8 Key Learning Areas.
  • If choosing a Secondary focus, indicate the two teaching areas in which they intend to specialise and how these teaching areas link with their previous undergraduate studies. ie. listing the previously studied courses that link with their anticipated teaching areas (6 courses minimum per teaching area). 

 

Computer Requirements

 

It is a requirement of enrolment in this program that all students have access to the CQUniversity website via the Internet.  Students will be required to undertake various components of study in the program using email and the Internet.

 

Residential Schools

 

There are three compulsory residential schools which are mandatory for this program.  These residential schools will only be held at CQUniversity Rockhampton with the first being scheduled for Orientation Week.

 

Residential School 1 - Orientation to Program - Monday 18 to Thursday 21 February 2013 (inclusive) 4 days;

Residential School 2 - Mid-program - Monday 24 to Wednesday 26 June 2013 (inclusive) 3 days; and

Residential School 3 - Pre-Internship - Monday 23 to Wednesday 25 September 2013 (inclusive) 3 days.

 

Note:

 

Part-time students COMMENCING in 2013 must attend:

  • Residential School 1: Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday;
  • Residential School 2: Wednesday only;
  • Residential School 3: Do not need to attend in first year of study.

Part-time students who are in their SECOND YEAR in 2013 must attend:

  • Residential School 1: Thursday only;
  • Residential School 2: Monday and Tuesday only;
  • Residential School 3: Monday 23 to Wednesday 25 September 2013 (inclusive) 3 days.

 

A schedule timetable for these residential schools will be emailed to students at least TWO WEEKS prior to the commencement of the residential school.  For further information, please contact the Program Advisor.

 

In School Placement

 

Placement arrangements for full-time students:

School term 2 - 32 days (3 days per week for 11 weeks)

School term 3 - 24 days (3 days per week for 8 weeks)

School term 4 - 30 day internship (5 days per week for 6 weeks)

 

Placement arrangements for part-time students:

Year 1 of study:

School term 2 - 16 days

School term 3 - 16 days

 

Year 2 of study:

School term 2 - 16 days

School term 3 - 8 days

School term 4 - 30 day internship (5 days per week for 6 weeks)

 

English Language Proficiency for Teacher Registration

 

From 1 January, 2013, the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) will introduce changes to the assessment criteria for English language proficiency to be consistent with teacher registration requirements in Australian states and territories.

 

In addition to the academic prerequisites listed above, international applicants are required to have an acceptable level of competency in writing, reading, speaking and understanding English.  For entry to this program, applicants will be required to have an IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) that shows an average band score of 7.5 across all four areas with:-

 

  • A score of at least 7.0 for Reading and Writing; and
  • A score of at least 8.0 for Speaking and Listening

 

All applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree at an overseas institution (excluding countries: Australia, NZ, UK, USA, Canada, Republic of Ireland) must also provide evidence of English Language Proficiency adhering to the same average scores as outlined above for entry to this program.   

 

The IELTS test scores must appear on a single IELTS TRF and be the result of a test undertaken during the 12 month period prior to submitting an application.

Career Opportunities

 

Like other professions, the teaching profession is impacted by issues of supply and demand. It is therefore wise to investigate your employment prospects prior to deciding on a program specialisation. This is especially important if you are unable to relocate.
