Students are required to select two secondary teaching disciplines. Within the first teaching discipline, students must undertake and pass seven (7) courses. Within the second teaching discipline, students must undertake and pass five (5) courses.

Students enrolled prior to 2012 who had selected alternative discipline areas to that listed above, will be able to continue and complete their original disciplines.

Please note that the offerings of the courses listed within the discipline list are subject to change.  You MUST refer to the most current edition of the online handbook for course availability and discuss your options with your Program and Course Adviser.

Prior to the start of the first term of study, a Residential School will be conducted on the Rockhampton campus with compulsory attendance expected at all sessions for students enrolled in this program in the distance education mode.  The focus of the Residential School is dependent upon the courses on offer within that term and will prepare students for their Embedded Professional Learning with a focus on such aspects as ethical practices, Duty of Care, and addressing the Professional Standards in their practicum courses.  The Residential School will provide students with the relevant tools to succeed with their study including assessment requirements and engagement in group activities to support their learning journey. 

Failure to attend the Residential School may result in a grade of Fail for each course enrolled.

The dates for the Residential Schools are published in the CQUniversity handbook.  It is the responsibility of each student to:-

• ensure they are in attendance at each Residential School;
• organise their own transport to and from Rockhampton for the Residential School;
• organise their own accommodation in Rockhampton for the duration of the Residential School.

Graduating Bachelor of Learning Management (Secondary and VET) students will be able to:

• develop and maintain positive and constructive relationships with learners;
• establish and maintain effective networks and partnerships to enhance teaching and learning;
• demonstrate commitment to professional practice;
• construct and manage inclusive and supportive learning environments;
• reflect critically on educational practice to effect informed change;
• know and understand theories, philosophies and ideologies of education;
• demonstrate a mastery of specific content knowledge;
• demonstrate the flexibility to manage challenging learning within existing and emerging learning communities;
• integrate information and communication technologies to enhance learning; and
• make a discerning use of interactive, multi-media technologies to ensure learning outcomes.

Applicants who enter the program with a recognised Trade qualification who wish to teach Secondary Industrial Design and Technology or Home Economics and Hospitality subject areas may be eligible for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) into this program of study. 

Applicants must provide a Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) portfolio to support an application for credit of up to a maximum of 7 courses for a discipline teaching area. This portfolio must include certified evidence of:

• Successful completion of a recognised Trade qualification or a combination of other equivalent qualifications suitable for your chosen discipline teaching area;
• Successful completion of a recognised Australian Apprenticeship and documented experience in the chosen teaching area; and,
• 3 to 5 years verifiable post trade work experience in the relevant industry in the form of a Statement of Service from the employer/s.

The applicant must demonstrate the standard achieved from participating in these activities is comparable to the standards and content knowledge in the discipline teaching area in which they are seeking credit. The onus shall be on the applicant to provide appropriate evidence that demonstrates the relevant skills, knowledge and understanding.

NOTE: Students who do not hold a relevant or recognised Trade qualification will be ineligible to apply for credit unless they have a completed Diploma level qualification.

Applications for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) into this program of study need to be submitted to the Program Advisor and will be assessed by the Head of Program or their delegate.

Like other professions, the teaching profession is impacted by issues of supply and demand. It is therefore wise to investigate your employment prospects prior to deciding on a program specialisation. This is especially important if you are unable to relocate.
