The Graduate Diploma of Midwifery aims to provide registered nurses with the theoretical, practical and research knowledge required to be a competent and effective midwifery professional.

Emphasis throughout the program is on progressive development of a woman-centred approach to midwifery practice underpinned by evidence informed practice and collaborative partnerships founded in primary health care principles.

At completion of this program the student will be able to:

• - Critique historical and contemporary issues in midwifery
• - Implement a woman centred philosophy as the foundation of practice within a framework of primary health care
• - Translate theory, principles and practices in a variety of contexts through the consideration and application of relevant evidence
• - Function in accordance with standards, competencies and legislation affecting midwifery
• - Promote the health of the woman, family and the community
• - Harness knowledge, skills and values to be a competent, scholarly, accountable, autonomous, responsible and reflective midwife.

To be eligible for the award of Graduate Diploma of Midwifery students must complete a total of 6 courses/48 units of credit as set out in the program structure which incorporate midwifery professional practice experience requirements.

Upon successful completion of the program, students make an application for registration as a midwife to Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA).

Please note: Specific criteria and education standards are required by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) and the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council (ANMC) in order to become registered and practice as a midwife in Australia.
