CK26 - Master of Indigenous Studies - No Enrolments in 2013

Program Aim

On successful completion, the student will be able to:

1. Critically analyse important professional issues, strengths and challenges that arise when both Indigenous and non-Indigenous perspectives and interests are to be considered

2. Integrate an appreciation of relevant historical and cultural differences into one's worldview and professional methodologies

3. Recognize emerging cultural developments, both in Australia and internationally, that are of relevance to Indigenous issues in Australia

4. Examine contemporary theories and practices designed to understand, negotiate between, and reconcile distinct or competing cultural interests

5. Develop and apply cross-cultural negotiation and communication skills in the development of innovative solutions

6. Cultivate an innovative and culturally sensitive approach to leadership in a chosen area and demonstrate an ability to encourage practical leadership in others

7. Exercise a high level of personal autonomy and accountability in the planning and execution of a substantial research project

Program Structure

This program consists of three courses in Indigenous Studies (worth 8 credit points each), three courses in the chosen major (worth 8 credit points each),* plus one research project (which, for administrative purposes, is treated as three courses worth 8 credit points each).  The three courses in Indigenous Studies consist of one core course and two elective courses (chosen from the following 3 elective courses):

  • INDG20003  Leadership and Indigenous People (core)
  • INDG20001  Indigenous Cultures in a Globalizing World (elective)
  • INDG20002  Indigenous Research Methodologies (elective)
  • INDG20004  Indigenous Cultures and Country (elective)

 

The research project is comprised of the following 3 courses:

  • INDG20005  Indigenous Studies Research Project 1
  • INDG20006  Indigenous Studies Research Project 2
  • INDG20007  Indigenous Studies Research Project 3

 

* For both the Environmental Management major and the Sustainable Communities major students are required to complete four courses for their chosen major given that some of these courses are worth 6 points each.
