Compulsory Residential Schools

 

The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences program has compulsory residential schools that are offered for first year, second year and third year for the exercise and sport sciences coded courses (ESSC). Residential schools held in Rockhampton are conducted for these courses taken by external students.  See the Residential School Timetable here.

 

The residential schools are presented in a block format that attempt to combine with non-ESSC coded courses to reduce multiple trips to Rockhampton for residential schools. Students completing study in a part-time mode should follow the recommended complimentary course combinations for their first level courses. Students selecting second plan study options are advised to look at possible residential schools offered by the program from which these elective courses have been taken. 

 

RESIDENTIAL 1 (YEAR ONE, TERM ONE):  This residential school is run in association with BMSC11001 Human Body Systems 1 and will incorporate course information for  ESSC11001 Physical Activity, Fitness and Health (term 1) and ESSC11003 Skill Acquisition and Movement (term 2).

Careful selection of the second plan area may limit travel to Rockhampton for the first year of study. Some second plan courses will have a compulsory residential school requirement.The year 1 and 2 sequence in the above table can be reversed if students wish to travel to Rockhampton in the first year of study.

 

RESIDENTIAL 2 (YEAR TWO, TERM TWO):  This residential school will incorporate course information for the following courses; ESSC12001 Exercise and Sport Physiology; ESSC12002 Exercise and Sport Management; ESSC12003 Exercise and Sport Psychology; ESSC12004 Exercise and Sport Biomechanics; ESSC12005 Applied Exercise and Sport Physiology;  ESSC12008 Applied Exercise and Sport Biomechanics.

The Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences program third year compulsory residential school is also presented in a block format. Students are advised to follow the recommended complimentary course combinations for their part-time mode of study for the third level courses. Students following the recommended sequence are strongly encouraged to attend residential school during the second year of their part-time study mode as this will enable students to contribute to the final stage of their learning in a residential school debrief of their work integrated learning courses. Students are advised that some courses such as second plan electives or non-ESSC coded courses may require a separate residential school.


Note: There are prerequisites for courses offered in the Bachelor of Exercise and Sport Sciences (BESS) program that build upon a sequence of prior assumed knowledge from previous courses. Students are advised to take the courses in the pre-defined order thus acquiring the knowledge that will be assumed in the presentation of course material at Advanced Levels. Students will be individually responsible for gaining the assumed entry-level knowledge of any course they elect to take out of sequence. For more information or assessment of prior learning, please contact the specific Course Coordinator.


Students enrolled in the BESS program having a residential school requirement must complete the residential school within 18 months of commencing the course. After this time the prac outstanding (PO) result will automatically be changed to AF (Absent Fail).

Work Placement

 

Across the three year program students will complete up to 500 hours of Work Integrated Learning through voluntary experience and observation in professional practice placements, working with the general population, sporting populations and rehabilitation or special populations. Additional practical experience is provided in second year courses by working and researching with clients on campus, at the onsite UniClinic, and the testing of general populations, schools and athletes. Failure to complete work placement and submit the compulsory activities (verified log book and supervisor evaluation) will result in students being deemed ineligible to graduate until this component is satisfactorily completed, regardless of whether all other required elements of the program have been successfully completed.

 

Before commencing work placement or Work Integrated Learning courses, students must have gathered the following to provide to the Head of Program and their workplace supervisor:

 

  1. Signed  placement agreement;
  2. Completed Queensland Health student health professionals' clinical placement or field work orientation checklist (http://www.health.qld.gov.au/SOP/) if attending a clinical placement within a Queensland Health facility;
  3. Current first aid certificate (check placement requirements);
  4. Blue Card is  required for placement when working with children under 18 years (not older than 3 years; free if completed through CQUniversity);
  5. Evidence of Immunisations as per the CQUniversity Policy for Vaccination of students in health courses when students perform duties or placements in Queensland Government facilities http://policy.cqu.edu.au/Policy/policy_file.do?policyid=157

 

In order for a workplace supervisor to perform a supervisory role, they must have relevant credentials as listed below. If none apply the supervisor is ineligible to participate as a supervisor during your placement.  

 

         1)     An accredited exercise physiologist with ESSA;

         2)     A university-trained professional with experience in exercise delivery and capable of

                 attaining, full membership of ESSA (see Work Placement Guidelines and Resources for

                 Supervisors); and/or

         3)     A certificate IV in fitness with at least 10 years experience within the exercise and sports

                 science industry

Application for Credit Transfer

 

Credit transfer will only be granted where a student is able to demonstrate that tertiary studies, equivalent in content and depth to the CQUniversity program, have been successfully completed. Students should examine the course synopses in this handbook to determine the courses for which they may be eligible to claim exemption.

You can apply for direct credit against CQUniversity courses, if equivalent tertiary level study has been completed. You must supply relevant documentation (study guides, course profiles, etc) to do this. Or, in some programs you can apply for electives outside of CQUniversity range of courses. If your study was undertaken more than 10 years old, you may not be eligible to apply for this as credit.  

 

Computing Requirements

 

It is a requirement of enrolment in this program that students have access to the CQUniversity website via internet. Students may be required to undertake various components of study in the program using email and the Internet.

 

It is strongly recommended that students have access to a broadband connection or higher to access online student resources that would include but not limited to, email, internet, video streaming, electronic assessment submission.
