CB71 - Master of Accident Investigation

Program Aim

The Master of Accident Investigation (Specialisation) develops advanced level expertise in the investigation and analysis of the factors which lead to accidents and the interventions required to prevent their recurrence. Master of Accident Investigation (Specialisation) graduates demonstrate advanced skills at systematically breaking down the factors leading to an accident and making the necessary findings and conclusions for prevention.  This program will be attractive to those who have responsibility for accident investigations across industry and society.  The program provides core studies in the principles of accident investigation, accident phenomenology, accident forensics, accident analysis, human factors investigation and specialist domain contexts (air, rail, road and industrial).  Students complete an applied accident investigation project based on a ‘real' accident reconstruction at the university ‘crash lab' and a three term capstone accident investigation or prevention research project.  The program has been developed in consultation with Australia's leading accident investigation professionals from air, rail, road and industrial contexts, and the leading organisations and government authorities which inform public safety strategies.  Students may apply for the award, Graduate Diploma of Accident Investigation in addition to the Master of Accident Investigation (Specialisation).

Program Structure
The Master of Accident Investigation (Specialisation) is a post graduate degree consisting of 12 courses, which normally takes three and a half years of part time study.  The program structure requires successful completion of six core courses in the principles of accident investigation, accident phenomenology, accident forensics, accident analysis, human factors investigation and three specialist domain courses (air, rail, road and industrial).  The program also requires successful completion of a three term capstone accident investigation or prevention project.
