CZ01 - Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS)

Program Aim

Skills for Tertiary Education Preparatory Studies (STEPS) is a pre-university preparatory program that prepares potential applicants for further study.

STEPS aims to afford adults who have turned 18 in the year of enrolment, and who are Australian or New Zealand citizens or hold permanent resident or humanitarian visas, an opportunity to study at university.

STEPS is a 12 week internal or distance program, designed to instill in its adult learners the skills and confidence necessary to embark on tertiary study.

STEPS covers academic communication, mathematics, computing, science, independent learning skills, study skills and library/information literacy skills.

The great majority of students who have completed STEPS have gained entrance to CQUniversity or other tertiary institutions, while others have moved on to more rewarding careers.

Program Structure

This program is offered internally or by distance education during Term 1 and Term 2, and by distance only in term 3.

To be awarded a Certificate of Completion, students must complete four courses:

  • 1 core; and
  • 3 electives (RPL exemption available)

Students are eligible to complete as many elective courses as are recommended for their individual study plan, based on the applicability of the course content to the student's undergraduate program of choice.

A limit will be placed on course enrolment in accordance with the requirements of the undergraduate program of choice.  Requests to enrol in additional courses will be considered by the Director of Academic Learning Services on a case-by-case basis.
