About Midwifery

The Graduate Diploma of Midwifery program offers students a pathway to become a midwife.   Midwifery is a woman-centred, political, primary health care discipline founded on the relationships between women and their midwives. Women-centred care embraces trust, empowerment, a supportive environment and continuity of care. Women-centred care is holistic encompassing, as accepted by the woman herself, the emotional, psychological and social as well as physical needs of the baby, the family and the community. Women-centeredness' places the woman in the position of power and control as the decision-maker during her unique childbearing journey.

Midwives believe that women in pregnancy, during childbirth and early parenting are undertaking healthy processes that are profound and precious events in each woman's life. These events are also seen as inherently important to society as a whole. Further that midwifery is emancipatory because it protects and enhances the health and social status of women, which in turn protects and enhances the health and wellbeing of society.
