Career Opportunities
Graduates of the Bachelor of Medical Science program from CQUniversity have developed the expertise and skills to work as health professionals in pathology, clinical investigation, biotechnology or nutritional areas. The pathology specialisation will prepare students for employment in diagnostic medical laboratories where haematological, biochemical, microbiological and histological analysis of human blood, urine and tissue samples is conducted. The clinical investigation specialisation is designed to equip students for diagnostic physiological measurement, particularly in the respiratory, cardiovascular and neurophysiology discipline areas. The nutrition specialisation is targeted at students who will pursue a career in nutritional health promotion and physical well being and will provide a pathway for progression into dietetics. The biotechnology specialisation will explore the ways in which living things and their molecular constituents are used as tools. With an emphasis on medical applications the student is ideally placed to pursue a career in the BioPharma industry and medical diagnostics. Students may exit with an interim award of Associate Degree in their area of specialisation on successful completion of the 2nd year of the program. Work integrated learning courses are included in each specialisation to facilitate work readiness of graduates.
About Medical Science
Do you want to work in medical diagnostic measurement and monitoring? Would you like to provide advice and assistance to your local community about their nutritional health? Do you see yourself in a medical research role investigating disease?
The Bachelor of Medical Science opens up opportunities for you to have an exciting and rewarding career in any of these areas. You don't need to decide on your specialist interest area until the end of your first year and by then you will have had plenty of exposure (including 2 weeks clinical placement) to the different career paths to help you decide. The first year of the program provides foundation knowledge in sciences, study and research skills and health professional practice. Once you have successfully completed the first year of the program, you select from the Pathology, Clinical Investigation, Biotechnology or Nutrition specialisation to study for the final two years. In each of these specialist areas health professionals and health-related scientists explore health and disease.
Medical Laboratory Scientists (Pathology) examine blood, tissue and urine samples to confirm that all cells and components are within a normal range or investigate the pattern of abnormality to assist in making a diagnosis. Clinical Physiologists (Clinical Investigation) measure function within the cardiovascular, respiratory and nervous system to exclude or confirm disease and then monitor progress in response to therapy. Nutritionists provide advice on healthy eating practices and help people modify eating behaviour when needed. Biotechnologists will work out how to use living things and their molecular constituents to design new diagnostic devices, synthesise important drugs, or make our environment more healthy.
You can exit with an Associate Degree after successful completion of the first 16 courses (2 years full time study) and seek employment as a Health Technician or Laboratory Technician, or continue on to qualify as a health scientist or work in public health areas such as the BioPharma industry or undertake postgraduate studies.
