Ambulance Service Employment Conditions
Students should be aware before entering the program that Ambulance services in Australia have specific requirements for employment that preclude people with certain health conditions. Please see specific State Ambulance websites for further details. Details for the Queensland Ambulance Service can be found at the following website: http://www.ambulance.qld.gov.au/recruitment/pdf/QP%20TOTAL%20Bk2.pdf.
Degree with Distinction
The Faculty will recognise outstanding academic achievement of students, by awarding a Bachelor of Paramedic Science Degree with Distinction to students who achieve a GPA of 6.0 and above, in their first attempt result in their sixteen enrolled courses in the second and third year level of the program.
Work Placement
Students are required to undertake three Clinical Paramedic Practice courses which will equate to a minimum of 14 weeks (560 hours) of work placement in the health industry primarily with the Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS). Experience in authentic work environments is very valuable as it develops the professional skills and ‘work readiness' of graduates.
Students will be required to be able to wear Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) including wearing a full respirator face mask when required on clinical placement. Failure to complete work placement and submit the compulsory activities (verified log book and supervisor evaluation) will result in students being deemed ineligible to graduate until this component is satisfactorily completed, regardless of whether all other required elements of the program have been successfully completed.
Before commencing work placement, students must have gathered the following to provide to the appropriate academic supervisor and their workplace supervisor:
1. Signed clinical placement agreement;
2. Current National Police Check (not older than 3 years);
3. Current approved first aid certificate; and
4. Evidence of Immunisations as per the CQUniversity Policy for Vaccination of students in health courses.
5. Students require a Student (S) blue card -application form can be found at: http://www.bluecard.qld.gov.au/
Students are also required to undertake a Medical Assessment followed by a health related Physical Assessment prior to any clinical placements with the Queensland Ambulance Service. Please see the link below for the Medical & Physical Assessment Requirements.

Compulsory Residential Schools
The Bachelor of Paramedic Science program has four compulsory residential schools that are offered for first year, second year and third year. Each year residential school is designed to incorporate information for relevant courses completed for year one, two or three.
For part-time students who are only studying PMSC11001 Foundations of Paramedic Science, please contact course coordinator Anthony Weber at a.weber2@cqu.edu.au to discuss possible alternatives to a residential school in Rockhampton.
You can view the Residential School timetable here.
COMBINED RESIDENTIAL SCHOOLS FOR FIRST YEAR COURSES
Students will need to complete a residential school for:
- ESSC11004 Study and Research Skills for Health Science (9 May)
- BMSC11001 Human Body Systems 1 (5 - 7 May)
- PMSC11001 Foundations of Paramedic Science (8 May)
- CHEM11007 Introductory Concepts of Chemical Sciences (1 - 4 May)
The combined residential school requires only one trip to Rockhampton to participate in several first year courses of the degree program (regardless of current enrolment in course).
Students studying in a PART-TIME MODE are STRONGLY RECOMMENDED to enrol into the following complimentary course combinations for year one.

Computing requirements
It is a requirement of enrolment in this program that students have access to the CQUniversity website via internet. Students may be required to undertake various components of study in the program using email and the Internet.
It is strongly recommended that students have access to a broadband connection or higher to access online student resources that would include but not limited to, email, internet, video streaming, electronic assessment submission.
Recognition of prior learning and application for credit transfer
Course credit may be granted to students who are able to demonstrate appropriate prior learning or experience. Credit transfer will only be granted where a student is able to demonstrate that tertiary studies, equivalent in content and depth to the CQUniversity program, have been successfully completed. Students should examine the course synopses in this handbook to determine the courses for which they may be eligible to claim exemption.
For more information about credit transfers contact the Program Advisor.
You will also need to complete the form at this link and add this to your application:
You can apply for direct credit against CQUniversity courses, if equivalent tertiary level study has been completed. You must supply relevant documentation (study guides, course profiles, etc) to do this. If your study was undertaken more than 10 years ago, you may not be eligible for credit.
Course Availability
Where fewer than 10 students are enrolled in any course, the faculty may elect to withdraw the offering of such a low enrolment course, advising students accordingly in writing by email and counsel students to enrol in another course, relevant to their designated program of study.
Where fewer than 10 students are enrolled as 'internal students' in a course, the faculty may elect to withdraw the offering of such a low enrolment internal class and run this course in external mode only, where this option is available. The faculty will transfer students into external mode enrolment and advise them in writing by email of the change to their enrolment accordingly.
