CG40 - Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language - no new enrolments

Program Aim

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) program, offers studies in the specialist area of teaching English to speakers of other languages.

 

The Graduate Certificate will provide an initial teaching qualification or a specialist qualification for those who are already qualified teachers. This qualification is primarily intended for those who will teach in overseas settings and does not qualify graduates to teach within Australia.

 

Students will be required to undertake teaching experience in related settings integrated in the courses that contribute to the program. This will include observations and small and larger group teaching as relevant.

 

The objectives of the program are to provide students with:

  • knowledge of factors that influence second language acquisition;
  • knowledge of how to teach reading, writing, speaking and listening using communicative and text-based approaches;
  • practical experiences with small group and whole class instruction;
  • skills for sequencing instructional material and assessing students' language development;
  • methods for evaluating teaching and adapting practice; and
  • knowledge of professional requirements for teaching effectively in the EFL context.
Program Structure

The Graduate Certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) can be completed in one term full-time study or equivalent. The program consists of three 8 unit of credit courses.
