Program Aim
The aim of the Bachelor of Arts is to provide students with a multidisciplinary education that will allow them the opportunity to gain knowledge in a range of humanities and social science disciplines. Students will experience a variety of perspectives, methodologies and learning styles. They will explore disciplines that study the way humans recognise, record and debate human practices, meanings and values. This will aid them in developing contemporary understandings both of the human condition and of how society operates.
Students will have the opportunity to gain crucial lifelong learning and transferable generic skills, such as critical thinking and problem solving. They will be able to apply these skills to a range of employment opportunites and life situations.The Bachelor of Arts will also enable students to gain entry into a variety of postgraduate and vocationally oriented programs.
The degree's flexible structure encourages students to tailor their own program by combining a selection of plans and courses including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies, geography and environmental studies, history, literary & cultural studies, psychology, sociology, welfare studies and writing. Students will also be able to take up to ten electives from any other program in the University.
Program Structure
To satisfy the requirements of the award, students must complete 24 courses (144 units of credit) as outlined below:
- 2 compulsory courses;
- Two plans (totalling 12 courses) from the Arts plans listed under CA10 Bachelor of Arts Handbook entry;
- 10 electives from the Arts plans and/or from any other CQUniversity program;
- No more than 10 Level 1 courses out of the 24 courses;
- Prerequisites and corequisites for each course.
Note: Students who enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts program prior to 2010 have the option of graduating under their original structure (i.e. the structure in place in the year they enrolled), provided they complete their program by Term 3, 2012. They may wish to complete the program under the new structure. The Executive Dean has the authority to approve any changes necessary to ensure that students who may be adversely affected by changes to the BA are able to complete their plans or programs. Please consult with the Program Advisor in the first instance with any concerns.
For further information, please ask a program advisor.
Course availability
Students should note that although Level 1 courses are offered every year, some Advanced Level courses may only be offered in alternate years. Students should check the availability by clicking on the hyperlinked course codes of their choices.
Computer requirements
Students are expected to have access to a computer with Internet and email capabilities as most of the BA courses now have an online presence in the learning management system. CQUniversity student computer labs and libraries provide computer access at CQUniversity campuses, while the Learning Network Queensland can also provide access for distance education students in most parts of the State.
Diploma of Arts
Students may, upon the completion of 8 courses (48 units of credit), exit the Bachelor of Arts with a Diploma of Arts. 4 of the 8 courses (or 24 units of credit) must come from the plans of the BA. The other 4 courses can be electives chosen from any other program at CQUniversity. Students must satisfy the normal prerequisites that apply to their courses. There is no entry to this program: that is, only students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts may formally apply to graduate with a Diploma of Arts.
