Bachelor of Arts strand
To satisfy the requirements of the Bachelor of Arts component of the BA/BLM award, students must complete 18 courses or 108 units of credit as outlined below:

• students must take 18 relevant teaching area courses (minimum of 2 relevant B Arts core studies plans as below);
• students can take up to three relevant plans from the BA core studies plans. Students electing to do only two complete core studies plans can negotiate another relevant teaching area through the program advisor for the BA;
• students must take no more than 8 Level 1 courses out of the 18 courses;
• students must follow prerequisites and co-requisites for each course; and 
• students who wish to take drama as a discipline study area may enroll in 4 courses from the Bachelor of Performing Arts program.

BA core study plans

Students will select teaching area courses through advice and consultation with the Bachelor of Arts Program Advisor. By carefully selecting courses, students are able to obtain 18 courses of study that can be linked to 3 secondary education curriculum areas.

Students selecting Japanese as one of their teaching areas will be required to take a proficiency test prior to entering the course and at the beginning of the second and third years of the course to ensure that they are achieving the required standard of proficiency to be eligible for employment as Japanese teachers.

Students intending to apply for teaching positions in the private sector may be required to show evidence of studies in religion. Students enrolling in this program should consult the Program Advisor from education no later than Orientation Week.

Note: that although the program is only offered internally, some BA courses are only available in the distance (flex) mode.

Diploma of Arts
If for some reason a student is unable to complete the full Bachelor of Arts, they can exit with Diploma of Arts. To be eligible you must have successfully completed 8 courses or 48 units of credit within the Bachelor of Arts (CA10). 4 of the 8 courses or 24 units of credit must come from the core studies plans of the BA. The other 4 can be electives chosen from any other program at CQU, or from credit for previous studies. Students must satisfy the normal prerequisites that apply to their courses. There is no entry to this program. Students must enrol in the Bachelor of Arts and formally apply to graduate with a Diploma of Arts.

Plans
A plan is made up of 6 courses (36 units of credit) from the same discipline. Normally, at least 4 of these 6 must be at Advanced Level. Most students complete 2 Level 1 and four Advanced courses, although some complete 1 Level 1 and 5 Advanced. In some plans, both Level 1 courses are required to be completed.

Students can negotiate a non-arts study plan as one of the required plans for the Bachelor of Arts strand.  This allows students the flexibility to pursue a study stream that suits their interests. Students must meet the usual pre and co-requisites for these courses.

Drama
Students electing to take drama as part of their studies in the BA/BLM should complete two separate and complete plans from the core studies of the BA, and take the drama option studies plan as their third plan.  Students may select up to four courses from the Bachelor of Performing Arts program, and two courses from the literary and cultural studies plan.

Application for credit transfer
Credit transfer will only be granted where a student is able to demonstrate that tertiary studies equivalent in content and depth to the CQU program has been completed. Students should examine the course synopses in this handbook to determine the courses for which they may be eligible to claim exemption. For more information about credit transfer contact the Program Administrator.
