This program is designed to:

• develop an understanding of the multiple meanings of sustainability and the concepts and theories employed in evaluating sustainable options;
• develop an appreciation and recognition of the diversity of models and options, relating to sustainable development;
• train students to think systemically and holistically about natural resource management and social and economic development; and
• cater for students from a variety of backgrounds, both educational and professional and with a wide range of interests.

To satisfy the requirements of this award, students must complete 4 courses or 32 units of credit as outlined in the course details. Students must undertake 2 core courses - 'Theories and Concepts of Sustainable Development' and 'Thinking Systemically and Sustainably'. 2 courses are also to be taken from either of the streams (a choice, that is, of 2 courses from a selection of 8). To provide a foundational basis, the 2 core courses must be taken before, or concurrently with others. There is no residential school for any course.

Students are required to complete:

• 2 compulsory core courses; and
• 2 electives from either of the streams outlined in the course details.
